Certified Nurse-Midwives provide full clinical care, which allows you to come to us from the beginning. We can run the tests to determine your eligibility for a homebirth. Unless you have uncontrolled asthma or a serious heart condition, you most likely a candidate for homebirth.

At times we may collaborate with endocrinologists, for example, if you are on thyroid medications. Other specialists we have worked with are hematologists and perinatal cardiologists. All to say that even when you have unexpected needs, you can expect us to be your primary care provider, giving you the same loving prenatal visits and providing you with education to empower you as we prepare you for your birth.

BLOOD WORK AND GENETIC TESTING

The latest technology in Down Syndrome screening (cell-free DNA testing) is non-invasive and highly accurate. It is a simple blood draw that can be performed as early as nine weeks at our office.  We also offer basic genetic screening/carrier tests and can refer you for further genetic counseling if necessary.

ULTRASOUNDS

We support the guideline set by the IAUM, which states that pregnancy scans should be performed at "the lowest level needed".  This means that for a low-risk pregnancy, an ultrasound is not routinely required in the first trimester.  In a few instances when the due dates are hard to determine, a quick first-trimester scan can be useful.  But more commonly, the first (and usually only) ultrasound scan for our clients is at twenty weeks.  This gives us confirmation that your pregnancy is going well, and that your baby is growing normally.  As midwives who do positional work to keep your baby in the correct alignment, we are interested in the placement of your placenta. We also have an ultrasound in the office that we rarely use, except to turn a breech baby (which we do in our office).
